Vacuum casting is similar to injection molding in that it requires a tool with a cavity in the shape of the final part. The major difference is that vacuum casting uses a "soft" mold made of silicone whereas injection molding using a "hard" metal mold that has been CNC machined. The drawback to Vacuum casting, then, is that the mold wears out more quickly. However, it is vastly more cost-efficient for low-volume and prototype plastic parts that require production-level quality and surface finishes.
Production Quality at Low Volumes
This process is a quick, cost-effective way to produce 10-200 units with production-level quality. Typically, each silicone mold will produce 20 castings.
Complex Elastomeric Parts
Vacuum casting is ideal for prototyping elastomeric parts such as complex gaskets and overmolds on rigid parts.
High Level of Detail
Vacuum casting allows for almost limitless complexity, including sharp internal corners unachievable with CNC machining, and designs without draft or uniform wall-thickness that can’t be injection molded.

Surface finishes can serve either a functional or aesthetic purpose. Surface finishes that serve both purposes are deemed cosmetic finishes, and are used for cosmetic parts. Producing cosmetic parts requires additional measures to minimize defects such as hang marks and scratches from tools.
